Prayerwalk: Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Strength & Discipline by Janet Holm McHenry is an excellent book to understand what prayerwalking entails. The first part of the book is an in-depth explanation of prayerwalking as she describes her own journey from the development of the idea through her challenges and celebrations. The second section is a prayerwalk group study with questions to prompt analytical thinking and focused praying before, during, and after your prayerwalk. The third section details how to organize a community prayerwalk.
I found her book to be not only informative, but also a breath of fresh air on a faith-filled life that includes praying and walking. As I read her book I was reminded of the first two verses of the old-time song “Just A Closer Walk with Thee.”
Just a closer walk with thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
I am weak, but thou art strong,
Jesus, keep me from all wrong,
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to thee.
Prayerwalking is described as a way to not only have a closer walk with Jesus, but also to make an impact on your home, community, state, nation, and possibly the world. It will also fulfill another need to live a healthier lifestyle by walking, moving, or generally increasing activity. So set aside some quiet time, put on your walking shoes, and begin to prayerwalk your way through your community. Good luck to you!
